Common Signs of a Faulty Toilet

When your toilet malfunctions, your domestic bliss can get turned upside-down in a hurry. If your toilet is failing and you can't easily fix it, you'll want to call up an experienced plumber who can get your toilet back to normal working order as quickly as possible. Here are six signs that your toilet needs to be repaired or replaced.

Water at Base of Toilet

A leak at the seal can cause water to pool at the toilet's base. There are a couple of ways to address this issue. For one, you can try to just tighten the bolts that fasten the toilet to your flooring. Or, to fully seal the toilet/drainpipe connection, a new wax ring can be put in.

Rust/Corrosion

If rust is present across large swaths of your toilet, then you're probably due for replacement. But if the rust is only affecting one area of the toilet, you might be able to get away with just replacing that part.

Weak Flushing

This could be due to a clog in the trap, sewer pipe, or vent pipe. Another possibility is that the flushing mechanism needs to be fixed. Slow flushing could also be caused by a buildup of minerals along the rim of the toilet.

Crack in Tank or Bowl

Cracks in the toilet bowl that are larger than 1/16th of an inch often mean that the toilet will need to be replaced. Smaller cracks should be promptly addressed by using the plumber's epoxy.

Doesn't Stop Running

You may be due for a flapper valve adjustment if your toilet won't stop running. If that doesn't do the trick, then there's a good chance you'll need a new flapper.

Tank or Bowl Doesn't Refill

A failing fill valve can prevent the tank or bill from properly filling back up. This problem can be resolved by replacing the valve.
